Meet Winsome
Winsome Earle-Sears, a native of Kingston, Jamaica, immigrated to the United States at the age of six. She is proud to have served in the United States Marine Corps.
In addition to her various appointments, she has served as the Vice President of the Virginia State Board of Education; and as a presidential appointee to the US Census Bureau, as co-chair of the African American Committee; and the Advisory Committee on Women Veterans to the Secretary of Veterans Affairs.
Winsome was first elected in 2002 to a majority Black House of Delegates district, a first for a Republican in Virginia since 1865.
She is the first female Lieutenant Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the first Black female elected to statewide office. As Lieutenant Governor, Winsome Earle-Sears presides over the Senate when they are in session.
A former program manager for the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce and VISTA volunteer, Winsome is a trained electrician and successful businesswoman. However, Winsome is most proud of her community work leading a men’s prison ministry and as director of a women’s homeless shelter.
She holds a B.A. in English with a minor in Economics, and an M.A. in Organizational Leadership, with a concentration in Government. Winsome and her husband, Terence, have two daughters Katia and Janel, in addition to DeJon, and granddaughters Victoria and Faith, who are now looking into the face of God.

ON THE ISSUES

Reduce the Cost of Living
Winsome’s father arrived in America from Jamaica with just $1.75 in his pocket, landing only 17 days before Dr. King’s 1963 “I Have a Dream” speech, with his own dream of a better life. She grew up with a deep appreciation for the value of a dollar and how the cost of basic necessities can make or break a family. As a small business owner, she knows firsthand how heavy-handed regulation stifles growth and chases hardworking people away.
That’s why, as lieutenant governor, Winsome has worked so hard to lower taxes, cut wasteful government spending, and remove harmful regulations.
As governor, Winsome wants to make sure Virginia is a place where all families can afford to live, raise their families, work, and build a future. She will fight for common-sense tax cuts that help all Virginians like eliminating the unfair car tax. She will scour the government books to cut wasteful government spending and job-killing regulations because taxpayers know how to spend their money and run their businesses better than government.

Tough on Crime
Winsome is a Marine –– it is her duty to protect our country and our Commonwealth. Virginians are paying the price for Democrats’ soft-on-crime policies, and Winsome will put a stop to it. Winsome’s position is simple: Protect innocent Virginians, prosecute criminals. As governor, she will end radical policies like catch-and-release and ensure violent criminal illegal immigrants are arrested, detained, and sent back to where they came from. She opposes sanctuary cities and will work alongside the Trump administration to remove those who break our laws and threaten public safety.
Winsome deeply respects first rescuers and those who serve in the line of duty. Keeping Virginia safe starts with creating a culture that honors and respects the brave men and women of law enforcement and making sure they have the resources to do their jobs.
A safe Virginia is a prosperous Virginia, and we cannot afford a governor who is willing to let criminals run amok.

Give Every Child a Quality Education
No child should be stuck in an underperforming school because of their zip code or their parent’s income level. As governor, Winsome will empower parents to choose the best school for their children so every child gets a quality education. She will prioritize parents’ rights and basic reading and math skills over ideological grandstanding. With Winsome in charge, Virginia’s education system will once again be the envy of the country.

Protect Right to Work
Winsome is a staunch supporter of Virginia’s right-to-work policy because it is essential to Virginia’s economic success. Right to work also protects workers from heavy-handed union bosses, forced dues, and fewer job opportunities. As governor, Winsome will protect Virginia’s business- and worker-friendly environment that has contributed to our increased job growth, higher wages, and lower unemployment rates. Winsome will never allow Virginia to become Maryland.

Protect Women
Women are empowered to reach their highest potential when they have access to a fair and level playing field—free from political agendas—but Democrats like Abigail Spanberger are trying to undermine 60 years of hard-fought and hard-earned women’s rights. Allowing biological males to compete in women’s sports is not only anti-women, it is dangerous. Winsome will do whatever it takes to protect women and girls.
Winsome fully supports the Trump administration’s action to restore fairness and safety to women’s sports. As governor, she will enforce federal law and support state laws that preserve equal opportunities for female athletes and protect women-only spaces where women can compete—and win—fair and square.
