Sears and Spanberger in Dead Heat for Virginia Executive Mansion Residence

BOSTON, MA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – An Emerson College/The Hill survey offers an early look at a Virginia Governor’s race showing Republican Lt. Governor Winsome Sears and Democrat former Congressional Rep Abigail Spanberger in a dead heat. Neither candidate has formally claimed their party nomination, but they are likely nominees. The poll of 1000 registered Virginia voters shows Spanberger at 42% and Sears 41%, with 4% claiming their voting for “someone else” and 13% undecided. Poll Executive Director Spencer Kimball notes while it’s a tie, clear demographic differences stand out with male and white voters going for Sears by 15% each.

Spanberger, Earle-Sears deadlocked in tight Virginia Governor’s race, new poll finds

Democratic former U.S. Rep. Abigail Spanberger and Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears are in a neck-and-neck race for Virginia governor, according to the first Emerson College Polling/The Hill poll of the 2025 election. Spanberger leads Earle-Sears by a razor-thin margin, 42% to 41%, with 4% of voters supporting another candidate and 13% undecided, the survey found.

With 10 months to go before the 2025 Virginia gubernatorial election, the race “is tight overall, but significant demographic differences are emerging”, said Spencer Kimball, executive director of Emerson College Polling.

Kimball noted that Earle-Sears has strong support among male voters, who favor her 52% to 37%, and white voters, who back her 50% to 35%. Spanberger, on the other hand, leads among women, 47% to 31%, as well as older voters over 70 and younger voters under 30, who support her 46% to 43% and 43% to 33%, respectively.

Both women are currently the only declared candidates for their parties in Virginia’s 2025 gubernatorial race. Earle-Sears appears poised to secure the Republican nomination after endorsements from Gov. Glenn Youngkin and Attorney General Jason Miyares.

On the Democratic side, however, the race could expand, as U.S. Rep. Bobby Scott, D-Newport News, has openly mused about running. Meanwhile, former GOP Rep. Denver Riggleman is considering a bid for governor or lieutenant governor as an independent candidate.

Thursday’s survey shows little change in the dynamics of the Virginia gubernatorial race since a September poll by the University of Mary Washington’s Center for Leadership and Media Studies, which found Spanberger and Earle-Sears tied at 39%, reflecting a consistently tight contest as the 2025 election approaches.

Youngkin backs Earle-Sears for Virginia governor

Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) endorsed Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears (R) for governor on Monday, ahead of the state’s gubernatorial race in 2025.

“Winsome has been an outstanding Lt. Governor, and she will be a great governor,” Youngkin wrote in a post on the social platform X.

“She has been an outspoken advocate for commonsense conservative principles and policies, a passionate voice for our military and veterans, and a relentless advocate for educational freedom and economic opportunity. She brings the fighting spirit of a Marine to the office every single day,” he said.

Earle-Sears was elected lieutenant governor in 2021, when Youngkin was running for governor. Virginia governors are term-limited to one four-year term.

Earle-Sears, who announced her candidacy in September, is the only Republican running in the primary so far. Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares (R), who was elected alongside Youngkin and Earle-Sears in 2021, said Monday that he would run for reelection instead of running for governor. His announcement gives Earle-Sears a clearer pathway to the nomination.

Virginia’s Youngkin endorses Winsome Earle-Sears for governor

WASHINGTON – Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin endorsed Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears for governor ahead of the state’s November 2025 gubernatorial contest. Youngkin and Sears are both Republicans.

The governor took office in early 2022, but the state constitution blocks governors from serving two consecutive terms, so he cannot run for re-election in 2025. The race will be one of the first significant races since President-elect Donald Trump’s 2024 victory.

Did Donald Trump’s win and Winsome Sears’ popularity lead to AG Miyares forgoing a run for governor?

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The 2025 race for the Virginia Governor’s Office is coming into focus. On Monday, Attorney General Jason Miyares announced he will not run for governor in 2025 and will instead seek a second term as attorney general.

“I don’t think it should be all that surprising.,” said 8News Political Analyst Rich Meagher.

Meaher says one of the reasons he believes Miyares opted against running for governor is because President-elect Donald Trump’s win earlier this month complicates things for Republicans in Virginia.

“There is always this kind of backlash against a new president that comes in and almost always, at least in recent years, the votes tend to move away from the party in power, ” Meagher told 8News. “So that makes it harder for Republicans to run for office.”

Plus, Meagher says Miyares wanted to avoid what would have been a very competitive primary against Republican Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears.

“I certainly think the risk of not being able to even win the nomination was a big one,” Meagher explained. “I don’t know that it’s a slam dunk that Sears would beat Miyares head to head, but she is popular.”

Virginia’s Winsome Earle-Sears could become first Black woman governor in U.S. history

Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears has filed paperwork to be Virginia’s next governor.

Why it matters: She’s the first Republican to enter the race.

Driving the news: The Virginia Department of Elections accepted the paperwork, first reported by WRIC, on Wednesday.

  • This clears the path for Earle-Sears, a Marine veteran who emigrated from Jamaica as a kid, to launch her campaign.

The big picture: With Mayor Stoney dropping out earlier this year, the 2025 matchup for Virginia governor so far is Earle-Sears against Rep. Abigail Spanberger, who announced a run last November.

  • That sets up this race to be historic, since Virginia has never had a woman as governor.
  • If Earle-Sears won, she would be the nation’s first Black woman governor.
  • In 2021, she became the first Black woman elected to statewide office in Virginia after defeating Democrat Hala Ayala in the general election.

Winsome Sears deeply ‘upset’ over Walz combat claim: ‘You never were in war’

Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears (R-VA) criticized Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) for his past comments on his National Guard service, arguing Vice President Kamala Harris’s 2024 running mate has “never” faced combat in war.

A 2018 clip of Walz shared by the Harris campaign showed the governor speaking against gun violence and stating that “weapons of war, that I carried in war” only belong in war zones, a statement some have taken to imply that he served in combat. However, Walz himself has never served in a combat zone, with Sears, a Marine veteran, stating many families of veterans who died in combat are likely joining her in being very “upset” and “offended” over Walz’s comment.
